“Parents may also choose to educate their children at home. For a child of compulsory school age, the home schooling program must be approved in advance by the superintendent or school committee of the home district. For further information on this option, contact your local superintendent’s office.” Taken from Choosing a School, section III, 7/24/20.

“What are the requirements for enrolling Massachusetts students in a private virtual school when the school is not based in Massachusetts?
If the private virtual school is not based in Massachusetts, the law would treat the student as homeschooled. The student’s parent or guardian would need to ask their district of residence to review and approve the student’s educational program.” Taken from Private Virtual Schools labeled April 7, 2018 from www.doe.mass.edu/cmvs/faqs/privatevirtual.docx on 7/24/20.
It appears that individual school districts manage their own home education policies and procedures, but several freedoms are protected under Commonwealth law. Check the district policies on your local school district’s website. Home education information is often under District Policies. Always check directly with the official Massachusetts Dept. of Education website to verify information. Even if some states may not require it, it is usually a good idea to let your last school know you will not be returning to avoid being counted as absent.

HomeschoolingByState.com provides direct links to state government sites, so you get accurate and up-to-date information! By checking your state department of education website above, you get current information instead of 3rd party websites’ information that could be old information! States are changing their information much more often than past years due to covid-19! We regularly checks links to make sure the state has not changed pages or page addresses, but if you find a link that doesn’t work, the main Department of Education page is included above in case you want to use their search feature to find the information yourself. For example, search for “schooling at home”, “homeschool”, “home school”, “home instruction”, “nonpublic”, or “compulsory school attendance”. However, be careful since a search may return results for old web pages or documents.
